Doctors will have an easy winter on the theory that "an apple a day keeps a doctor away," says the Sears-Roebuck Agricultural Foundation, for according to the latest official figures, the apple crop will be a bumper one. A total of 242,000,000 bushels will be produced, the government report states. Last year the crop amounted to only 172,000,000 bushels, while the average crop for the last five years was 170,000,000 bushels, the Foundation points out. Most of the apples are grown in the Northern states. New York is the heaviest producer. The bulk of the crop is grown on general farms and less than 45 per cent goes into commercial channels.
The commercial crop will total about 40,000,000 barrels, which is 83 per cent larger than the average crop of 30,000,000 barrels. On this basis, says the Foundation, each person will have to eat four apples, as compared to three a year ago.
