Gotten Upon the Easter Island by Commander B. F. Day.
Washington, January 15.--The Secretary of the Navy received a telegram today from Commander B. F. Day announcing the arrival of the Mohican at Valparaiso, and stating that he was successful in securing a prehistoric stone image from Easter Island for the Smithsonian Institute. A German vessel secured one of these images a couple of years ago. The Smithsonian authorities were desirous of obtaining one, and requested the Secretary of the Navy to direct a naval vessel to make the effort in their behalf when convenient. The commander of the Mohican was ordered a year ago to stop at Easter Island and to secure one, if possible.
