Upon the news of general Clinton's attempt to land at New York, col. Dickinson, with two companies from the three first battalions of the Philadelphia militia, prepared to march to New York, at the request of general Lee, but were countermanded on Thursday, by an account that the king's troops had left that city without effecting a landing. The competition and spirit which appeared among the officers and privates upon this occasion indicated that the citizens of Philadelphia are upon a footing with the foremost of the colonies in resolving to die freemen rather than to live slaves.
