(From the Macon Herald.)
Among the many distinguished visitors to Macon Tuesday, was the Hon. J. P. Carter of Hattiesburg, candidate for lieutenant governor. Capt. Carter is president of the National Bank of Commerce at that place, an institution that appeals very strongly to our people by reason of the number of Macon young men employed therein. Indeed this fact alone should greatly enhance the popularity of Capt. Carter in this community. But aside from this, Capt. Carter is personally a man sans reproche. A typical southern gentleman of the old school and a valiant ex-confederate. He is indeed one who in the language of the psalmist, "hath clean hands and a pure heart," a refreshing virtue truly in the days when the discord breeding demagogue parades the land. Capt. Carter is moreover, a gentleman thoroughly in sympathy with the progressive spirit that has made Hattiesburg famous, and that is destined under the providence of God and a wise and liberal administration to place the star of Mississippi in the forefront of the galaxy of commonwealths. If elected lieutenant governor, he will do his duty honestly, fearlessly and capably, and believing in his eminent fitness for the position, it is a pleasure to add this wholly unsolicited tribute to the excellent impression his own pleasing personality and many sterling virtues have made for him.
