DENVER— General Dwight D. Eisenhower asserted Friday he alone will "boss" his fighting campaign and said he will kick off in the east around Labor Day his all-out drive to oust the Democrats from the White House.
The Republican Presidential candidate in his first formal news conference since he received the nomination three weeks ago, echoed the ideas of Democratic candidate Gov. Adlai Stevenson for an "unbossed" campaign. The Illinois governor on Wednesday said he was "very definitely" going to run his own campaign.
Both sides have accused the other of being the "captive" or "puppet" of party leaders and labor groups.
TO TAKE CHARGE
Ike, in declaring firmly he will run the show, said:
"I have been designated by the convention to take charge of the National end of the campaign. I have to be responsible for these policies—there can be no other boss in this campaign."
Newsmen asked the general if he thinks foreign policy will be the "big issue" in the campaign, and how he viewed Gov. Stevenson's statement on this phase of the campaign.
The General said he would have to "think over" Stevenson's statement, and added:
"I think it is oversimplifying that one thing is going to be the big issue."
