BROKE JAIL.

Five Prisoners Escaped From Mansfield Bastile.

Mansfield, O., May 12.—Five prisoners made their escape from the Richland county jail last night with the aid of some unknown assistance from the outside. Sheriff Payne's little daughter, temporarily out of sight of the locked door leading to the prison cells, returned just in time to see all of the prisoners disappear through the outside office door. She gave the alarm and in a few moments a number of police officers were in pursuit, assisted by dogs from the police department and the Ohio Reformatory, but the crowd around and following was so great that the dogs worked with difficulty, and at 10 o'clock none of the fugitives were captured.

The prisoners were S. W. Burkehart, Albert Mackley, Edward Melchior, Niles Beal, and Charles Burhett.
