Birmingham, Ala., Aug. 20.—A special from Alexandria City says the Alexandria City rifles were called out to prevent the lynching of Nathan M. Reed, a farmer, 60 years old, who is accused of wife murder. Reed is a prominent member of the Baptist church and an officer in several societies. He had been married thirty years and has several children grown. Recently he has been paying attention to his wife's young sister. Reed's wife accused him of intimacy with her sister, and he became so enraged that he caught her by the throat and choked her, from the effects of which she died. Reed was arrested, and the news of his crime caused intense excitement. A lynching party was organized, and only the presence of the military saved his life.
