LOS ANGELES (INS)-- Anyone who thinks the New York Giants and the Cleveland Indians haven't a chance in their respective major League campaigns this season just isn't listening to the club managers.
Giants' pilot Bill Rigney and Indians' chief Kirby Farrell agreed in Los Angeles that their clubs will be up there swinging with the best of them, including the New York Yankees in the American League.
Said Rigney:
"We have a fine nucleus of great players--Willie Mays, Johnny Antonelli and Red Schoendienst, to name three--and a good supporting cast of Pros.
"If a couple of our rookies keep on playing like they have the Giants will be tough all the way."
And from Farrell:
"Cleveland has the best pitching in the league. All we need is a few more runs. We hope to get more runs by improving our hitting and injecting a little more speed on the bases."
"We might even give them a little "Stengelese this year - more of our players around to keep our hitting and speed at a maximum."
The Indians and the Giants got a chance to test this optimism on each other over the weekend. Cleveland decisioned New York, 4-3 Sunday, and the Giants walloped the Indians, 9-3 on Saturday.
