WASHINGTON, May 5th, 1837.

The sub-committee took their departure last evening for your city, having executed the object of their mission to Washington, as well as they could reasonably expect. It was said by some who saw them depart, that they seemed to be in good spirits, and by others, that they looked somewhat disappointed. They received, yesterday, the written reply of the President to the application of the committee; but the nature and character of that reply are still in nubibus. Conjectures are various, but the general belief is, that it was unfavourable, as I have already stated. The Globe of this morning refers to it briefly, and speaks rather contemptuously of the application of the merchants of New York. It is evident that Van Buren will do nothing, though, like President Monroe, he may promise much. He has studied, to some advantage, the mysteries of the Delphic oracle, and knows how to deal in ambiguities better than any man in this country. The contents of his letter to the committee will not be made public, till they arrive in your city, and when the reply is published, it will be found to amount to nothing. The cholera cannot be cured, and must take its course, I fear, for some time. "What can't be cured must be endured," and the deluded people of this country must endeavour to bear with patience, the evils which have been thrown upon them by their own imprudence, and the madness and profligacy of their rulers. The friends of the administration wish it to be thought a mere "opposition trick," and that the meeting in New York was got up for mere party purposes. But the tornado will sweep over the country, till all will be made to feel their deplorable folly in having elevated to power a pack of quacks and fools, whose measures or selfishness have reduced them to ruin. Van Buren has commenced his career unpropitiously--he has fallen upon evil times, and he has neither the energy nor the wisdom necessary to rescue himself or his country from the impending destruction which hangs over it.
