ABOUT
1905

We dug into the archives and found a picture of the town of Bauxite about 1905.

This house and store were located on what is known now as Pine Street and is one short block from the present Rock Island Railway station.

J. W. Smith bought this store from Gus Graham in 1904 with no anticipation this village was to grow and become nationally famous as the source of domestic bauxite, the most commonly used ore for making aluminum.

Where this store once stood is a mined out bauxite pit.

The person at the extreme left is now Mrs. H. N. Sanges of Bauxite.

Moving right—the pictured are Grace Donham (now Mrs. Tommy Gray), Clara Emery, Mrs. J. W. Smith, Mrs. W. R. Donham, Smith Donham, John Emery, Blanche Donham, J. W. Smith and W. R. Emery (standing on the porch of the store building).
