Full Text

It was only last Autumn that Roscoe Conkling, the great Iago of the Republican party, thus expressed himself anent the then distant nominating convention and its possible work. Garfield need not read between the lines to discover impending political doom: it is as writ large as writings on the wall:

'New York will have something to say in the next presidential fight and New York republicans will never support an Ohio candidate again.

'The Republicans of other states will may consent to another nominee from that State (Ohio) till the hour (they) come for the sacrifice of the party.'

'It is not 'power' that Ohio has in the party: it is merely an accidental phenomenon that will last no longer than there is a chance of change.'

'Ohio Republicans must step down and out. The Republican party—the thinking, voting masses of the party demand that whole horde shall go out of public life.'

'We dare not take the risk of another Ohio man: already one too many to last us: we have experimented with that danger.'
