MR. BRYAN'S TOUR.
Large Audience Listens to Him at
Benton Harbor, Mich.

Benton Harbor, Mich., Oct. 10.-W. J. Bryan began his two days' tour of Michigan with a speech in this city. His special train, which left Chicago at midnight, stopped at Michigan City, Ind., where Mayor Maybury of Detroit, Democratic candidate for governor; Alfred Lucking of Detroit and Thomas E. Barkworth of Jackson joined the party. Colonel Bryan made a three minutes before breakfast speech here and also spoke at New Buffalo, where the train made a brief stop when the train reached this place while Colonel Bryan was at breakfast. And Thomas E. Barkworth spoke first from an improvised platform which was erected near the station. The sun was shining so brightly when Colonel Bryan mounted the platform to say that he was entitled to hold an umbrella over his bare head! By way of voice. In advocating the light of humanity over the light of money in government, chiding the Republican party of the present day with putting the dollar up to the man and saying, "Money is the handiwork of man: man is the handiwork of God." Continuing, he said: "You can change your money, but you cannot change human nature to any great extent, and if you want to see how sordid the Republican party is today I need not remind you that it insists on making the money question of paramount importance, whereas the question of human rights is the question of paramount importance in this campaign. In 1896 the Republicans were worrying about the 50 cent dollar. They thought that was something awful, and yet today, they have given us an 85 per cent citizen in Porto Rico, and they cannot tell us what per cent they are going to give us in the Philippine Islands. "In 1896 they said we could not have a double standard of money. Now they want a double standard of government. Then they said that we could not maintain the parity between the white metal and the yellow. Now they think they can maintain the parity between the white citizen here and the yellow citizen in the Philippine Islands."
