On the 16th inst. Mr. Abel Remusat pronounced a discourse on opening of his course on the language and literature of the Chinese, established at the royal college of France by a desire of His Majesty.--The announcing of a public course designed to elucidate a language celebrated in Europe for the difficulties with which it is surrounded, collected a very numerous auditory. The professor exposed with great clearness the political, religious and literary advantages of the Chinese language, and successfully combatted the vulgar prejudice which has led us to regard this as the most difficult of all languages. On the same day at half past 2 o'clock, Mr. Chezy commenced his course on Sanscrit literature. His discourse was enriched by a variety of brilliant passages and poetical expressions, borrowed from the writers whose beauties he has undertaken to analyze. The poetical episode which he introduced, produced the most lively sensation upon the minds of his auditors. Mr. Remusat, the only man in France who possesses a knowledge of Chinese literature, was already known in the most advantageous manner to all the orientalists of Europe, by the works that he has published upon the language of which he is professor. Mr. Chezy was likewise known to the public, by an elegant translation of Medjnoun and Leila, a Persian heroic poem, & one of the most pleasant compositions of the East. He has likewise recently published an episode entitled The death of Yadjudalta, extracts from the grand Sanscrit poem, The Ramayana. This piece, filled with the most tender and affecting interest, is calculated to give the most advantageous impression of the poetic genius of the writers of India.
