THE GRAND RIVER TIMES, JULY 22
Local and Miscellaneous.

COMMENDATIONS. Since we have had charge of the Times, although we have not been able to do as well as we have wished, or could under other circumstances, we have received a large number of commendatory notices from our brethren of the press. Although such words are pleasing to us, and by no means lost, we have not heretofore copied any of them, thinking that such a course smacks too much of egotism, especially if persevered in from week to week. The old adage is true which says "self-praise is in effect dispraise."

Yet it may do to occasionally publish a friendly notice, and we have therefore resolved to copy a few words of commendation from our exchanges, as specimens of many we receive.

The Vermont Citizen says:
The Times is a good specimen of a western paper—fresh and vigorous. The editor is an able and entertaining writer.

The Clayton Co. Herald, among other remarks, has the following concerning our paper:
It bears the marks of a master workman in its general appearance, and is a well conducted and readable paper.

The Romeo Argus gives us the following quite favorable notice:
The Eastmanville Times is a spirited sheet, published at Grand River, by Eastman & Co., and we have a desire to know who the printers are. It is got up in a style that none but "practicals" can imitate, and the editor has our appreciation of the good he is trying to confer on the Press. Success is depicted on its "face," and if the inhabitants there fail to support the Times, they should thereafter be left in worse than Stygian darkness, or be obliged to read Caesar's Commentaries, to keep their spelling good. Price $1 a year. Worth $2.

The Valparaiso Republican copies our editorial "The Three Worlds," published in the Times of July 1st, and credits it to the 'Grand Rapids Times.' About as bad as the mistake of one of our brethren who for eight weeks past has persisted in sending us three copies of his paper, one to Grand Haven, another to Eastmanville, and the third and last to Grand River. Rather mixed, gentlemen, we think.
