Early Corn

Early planting of sweet corn combined with unusually favorable growing conditions is enabling Harry Sutter, farmer residing three and one-half miles west of Bluffton, to cash in on a considerable quantity of pre-season sweet corn.

Sutter has been selling corn to Bluffton grocers during the past week and also delivered three truck loads of sweet corn to commission houses in Detroit, Michigan, where he sold the product for 35 to 40 cents per dozen. City retail markets sold the corn to consumers for 50 to 60 cents per dozen, it was reported.

Sweet corn at this time of the season is considered unusual in view of the fact that most farmers have practically no corn until the first or second week in August.

An early harvest of sweet corn requires sandy soil and planting of a quick maturing variety of corn early in the spring.

Sandy loam is preferred for early corn due to the fact that it dries out very early and enables the farmer not only to plant early but to work the fields earlier than usual. Clay soil stays wet too long for early working of the ground.

Advantage of getting an early harvest of sweet corn lies in the much higher prices available at this time of the year. In August the prices range usually from ten to fifteen cents a dozen ears.

NINE ACRES

Sutter has nine acres in sweet corn in four seedings. The seed was planted at different times in order to make a continuous market supply.

Sutter has been using early hybrid varieties of seed corn.

Other farmers in the area specializing in early sweet corn are A. B. Hilty and Charles Reese operating farms north of Pandora. In addition, numerous general farmers have been planting smaller fields of sweet corn.
