We advise the people of Doniphan county-especially the aspirants for office -to compel Gen. Lane to swear to his residence. He pretended to belong to Doniphan at the last election. Yet he has a case in Court, in which, in order to get a claim, he pretends to be a citizen of Lawrence. When we asked him how he harmonized his statements, he candidly told us the "trick of it." It was necessary for him, he said, to defeat Robinson in every way, because they were rivals for the Senatorship, and might finally fight for the Presidential nomination. For, according to his theory, Kansas will have merely to indicate her will in 1860, and the Republican party will accept its candidate whoever she selects. Therefore it was necessary to crush Gov. Robinson in order to make himself the bright and particular star of the West! The Constitutional Convention, he thought, was to be the great climax of our Free State politics, and therefore it was necessary that he should be in it and that Robinson should not. "It will only be a short step," he said, "from the Presidency of that Convention to the Presidency of the United States."

In order to defeat Robinson at Lawrence (so he told us, and we found it for a wonder to be true,) he went down there and publicly took ground against the old politicians being candidates for the Constitutional Convention. Robinson was deceived by the trick, and was not a candidate. Lane openly declared he would not be a candidate. Yet, as soon as he saw that his duplicity had succeeded, or rather, after he had done everything in his power to make it succeed, he hurried up to Doniphan and became a candidate. Some people would call this conduct smart: but others, again, think it is contemptibly mean.-Crusader of Freedom.
