SHASTA COURIER.
And Then?—The women who have found themselves unfit for the places their mothers filled with rather dubious success, have been making a great palaver for their endowment with the franchise. They have had no open opposition from their sisters—for those opposed are not so open—but modest, unpretentious women, whose virtues secure them abundant protection, in the affection of honorable men. Now, however, that the broad-mouthed ranters attack Congress with their plan for the Sixteenth Amendment, a quiet remonstrance goes up, from some among the best ladies in the land, who do not wish to be drawn into the field of politics in order to combat with the ballot the influence of the bad of two sexes.
The solemn truth is, where you find a female advocate of female enfranchisement, you find a woman whose woman's heart, woman's charms, woman's magnetic loveliness, are lacking—a beggared creature of God, unqualified for the sphere which a freak of Nature but partially marked her for—and, not fitted for a woman's life, she seeks to be something—do something—not well knowing what.
