N E W - Y O R K June 8.

Yesterday between 3 and 4 o'Clock in the Afternoon, came up a violent Gust of Wind and Rain, accompanied with uncommon Thunder and Lightning, during which this City was struck with the Lightning and took Fire, but was by the timely and usual Vigilance of the Inhabitants happily extinguished, with little Damage. The Steeple Was under Repair, and one of the Gentleman who had the care of it, being below, Was (together with two of his Lads) struck down, but received no Hurt; otherwise than remaining feeble for a short Space.

Mr. Callow's House in Wall Street, was struck much about the same Time, but sustained little or no Damage. It came down the Chimney, and run along the Brass Nails that was in the Settee near the Hearth, blackening the Heads of all of them; it then entered the Settee, shivered it to Pieces, and took its Course thro' the Hearth into the Cellar.

Another House was struck on Golden Hill, and a Third in the French Street: but neither of them damaged.

A Barn at Bushwick, on Long Island, was set on Fire by the Lightning, the same afternoon, and consumed.

Peter Ellis's Boat from Mamaroneck lying at Peck's Slip, had her Mast shivered, and four Sheep and a Calf kill'd in her Hold. No Persons were hurt.

A large Cedar Tree at the North River was likewise struck: There were four Men standing under it, but none received hurt.

A Ship in the North River, had her Mast shivered; and the Brig Pompey (Captain Goodwin) had her Foretop mast greatly damaged.

A great Number of Limbs of Trees in the Broad Way were torn off by the Violence of the Gust; and sundry Trees in the Neighbourhood of the City turn'd up by the Roots.
