Nelson Conductor On SF Streamliner

WINSLOW. Ariz.--G. W. Nelson, veteran BRTer in Lodge 477, is now a conductor on a Santa Fe streamliner.

Marking his 43rd year as a member of the Brotherhood, Nelson retired sometime ago as assistant national legislative representative in Washington after eight years in that post.

He joined the BRT in 1912 in Lodge 24, Galesburg, III and has continuous membership since then. He also has been a member of Lodges 420 and 812, in addition to 477, during his career.

Nelson, who is former chairman of Arizona Joint Legislative Boards of the Transportation Brotherhoods, was the BRT's witness in defense of the Arizona Car Limit Law in two federal courts.

He served as a member of Arizona State Senate in four regular sessions and in six special sessions. He authored the women's eight-hour law and the soldiers', sailors' and widows' tax exemption law. He directed the legislation which outlawed the yellow dog contract.

A veteran of World War I with overseas service, Nelson was a member of the Executive Board from 1939 to 1950. He attended five BRT conventions.

Nelson started his rail career as a brakeman on the Burlington in 1911 and went from there to the Southern Pacific. Always quite a traveler, he made a trip to Hawaii two years before he started railroading.

After working on the SP, he took a trip to Europe and on his return hired out on the Santa Fe.
