A Libel.

We find published in the Sacramento papers a copy of a complaint filed by J. W. Gish and R. H. Woodward against Senator Gwin and Ex-Mayor Hardenbergh, in which it is charged that the firm of Gish & Co. agreed to publish the Statesman newspaper, and advocate the re-election of Mr. Gwin to the U. S. Senate, in consideration, in part, of certain Government advertising which he (Gwin) was to secure for them. They charge that, in carrying out their part of the contract, they employed Maj. Meredith to edit the said paper and support Mr. Gwin's re-election, but that Messrs. Gwin and Hardenbergh failed to perform their part of the contract.

In reply to this, a number of gentlemen conversant with the particulars of the establishment of the Statesman newspaper—among whom are Gen. Denver and Comptroller Bell—pronounce the statement of Gish and Woodward false in every particular. Maj. Meredith, in a published card, also states that the statement in regard to himself is wholly false. We do not know Woodward, but as for Gish, we can very readily believe that he could not only publish, but swear to, a statement of falsehoods. If he was as well known by citizens generally as he is among printers, there would be no sort of propriety in any person denying any charge made by him.
