Court Martial Ordered To Try Sergeant for Death of Six on March

WASHINGTON, (AP)—The Navy Saturday ordered a court-martial to convene May 14 or soon thereafter to try S/Sgt. Matthew C. McKeon for the disciplinary march drownings of six marine recruits at Parris Island, S.C.

A marine spokesman at Parris Island confirmed this after it was reported by the Washington Evening Star.

Charges against McKeon include manslaughter, which carries a maximum penalty on conviction of 10 years in prison.

The marines, in a report to Congress, charged that McKeon, a drill instructor at the South Carolina base, led the recruits to their death April 8 while under the influence of vodka.
