Full Text

The Sickles trial at Washington, attracts a great deal of attention at this time. This results more from the official position of the parties than anything else. It is surely not because there is anything very peculiar in the Case. True, Sickles shot the seducer of his wife-or what he pretended to believe such-in open daylight, and on the Sabbath: but for a drunken, rowdy Congressman, and a profligate and dissipated district Attorney, that circumstance need make but a slight impression. Had one of the parties been an honest dray-driver, and the other a hard working hod carrier, the circumstance would never have created more than a ripple upon the surface of society! Circumstances, sometimes, alter cases. Isn't this one of that kind?
