Chairman of a New Richmond Relief Committee
"Roasts" Scofield.
New Richmond, Wis., June 22.—The state relief commission, consisting of Colonel Boyle, of Milwaukee; Leslie Wilson, of Chippewa Falls; O. Ingram, of Eau Claire; O. W. Mosher, of New Richmond, and A. E. Jefferson, of Hudson, arrived yesterday and at once began preparations for assuming complete control of the relief work now being done for the cyclone sufferers. A permanent organization was effected and a meeting of business men of the city was held at the school house with the commission, and sub-committees were then appointed.
Governor Scofield did not accompany the party. The prevailing sentiment of the community was shown at the afternoon public meeting when the governor's name came before the citizens on a motion made by Father Degnan that a vote of thanks be tendered the governor for his kindness toward this little city. After a sharp discussion, in which Chairman Glover roundly denounced the governor for his remissness, it was decided to let Father Degnan "prepare any resolutions he saw fit," and send the governor on behalf of the citizens.
