British Colonists in the West Indies have been kept in excitement for several years by interference from religious class in the mother country and missionaries in the Islands regarding the condition and domestic treatment of slaves. This has been increased by acts of Parliament for ameliorating slave conditions and regulating treatment. Irritation of proprietors has been aggravated, especially in Jamaica, by the British Government's intention for immediate and total abolition of slavery without compensation.
