Full Text

The British Colonists in the West Indies have, as our readers know, been for several years kept in a state of excitement by the interference of the religious class in the mother country and of missionaries in the Islands, with the condition and domestic treatment of the slaves of the planters. This excitement has been increased by various acts of Parliament for ameliorating the condition of slaves, by the regulation of their treatment, &c.; and the irritation of the proprietors has more recently been greatly aggravated, especially in Jamaica, by the intention understood to be formed by the British Government for the immediate and total abolition of slavery in the colonies, without compensation to the owners.
