Strange Proceeding.—The Board of Aldermen in New York, on Monday evening, received a communication from Monmouth B. Hart, Esq. sheriff, enclosing the sum of $1,000, which he had received in a letter signed "W. W. W.," sent to him on the day preceding the one appointed for the execution of John C. Colt. The letter in which the money was enveloped, stated that the sum was offered on condition that Mr. Hart, the sheriff, would like General Jackson, boldly assume the responsibility, and decline, and positively refuse to hang Colt. If he acceded to the suggestion of the writer, he was to receive another sum of $1,000.
