SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT OF PAUL.
It was in this parish, also, that was organized, by Rev. Father De la Croix, the first Conference of that distinguished Association which has since extended its operations over nearly the whole city, and become the most important of all our charitable societies. There are at present, in full operation, ten Conferences of St. Vincent de Paul. Though all their works are quietly and unostentatiously performed--though their rules prohibit the promulgation of the good which they may effect, it is impossible, in their case, as in all the silent workings of charity, to stifle the voice of gratitude. The name of this society is not blazoned upon lofty monuments, but it is written on many an humble heart.
