The amendment offered by Mr. Dickinson to appropriate $50,000 to complete the patent office was rejected, and the one offered by Mr. Clark to appropriate $100,000 was adopted.
The amendment to appropriate $5000 for the erection of a new green house was also adopted after a humorous debate. Amendments were offered by Mr. Rusk for the employment of twenty-two additional clerks in the post office—by Mr. Mason, appropriating $10,000 for the improvement of the ground south of the President's house—by Messrs. Badger and Mason, for further improvements of the public grounds—by Mr. Dodge, appropriating $5000 for paying the governor and judges of Minnesota. Several other amendments were offered, pending their consideration the senate adjourned.
