Labor Under Cover of Darkness to Cut Inlet to Now Dried-Up Bay
Fergus Falls, Minn., July 23.-(P)- Under cover of darkness, property owners on the shore of Little Darling lake, near Alexandria, Douglas county, cut a channel through to Big Darling and obtained a sufficient flow of water to bring Little Darling back to near normal.
Prior to the drouth years, Little Darling was a bay of Big Darling, but with receding water a sandbar appeared across the bay, cutting it off entirely from water in the larger lake.
A petition was circulated and money obtained to cut a channel from the Big Lake, but property owners on the larger body of water objected.
Cottagers on the smaller lake hired men and teams to work after dark and completed the channel.
Objectors appealed to County Attorney Kenneth Dell, who holds that government records show Lake Darling as one lake, with Little Darling as a bay and not a separate lake and Big Darling residents are without legal power to prevent opening of the channel.
