Douglas High School
Manual Training In Textiles
The display of the sewing department of the Douglas high school, which has been open to the public for the past few days, shows that the girls of Douglas are receiving most splendid training in the art of spending and selecting appropriate clothes and in the use of commercial patterns.
A number of the most attractive garments were those which had won first or second prize at the recent Cochise county fair. There was a clever looking wash dress made by Mary Negri which had won a blue ribbon. Another suit made by Christine Bollweg which had cost $1.50 and which had also won a blue ribbon. A silk dress made by Sue Searles also won a first place as did a pair of pajamas made by Ruth Chaney, an eighth grade student.
May Ream, 8A, had a clever looking school dress which cost a dollar and which had won a first prize. Irma Monteon, an eighth grade student also had a number of garments of exceptional work, especially a gown which had taken a blue ribbon at the fair. Anna Mae Williams also took a second ribbon on a dress and Eunice Brewer a second ribbon on a piece of lingerie.
In the display were aprons made by pupils in the seventh grade who were taking sewing for the first time, and the display of cotton underwear was as attractive as any shown in the shops and the work was splendid.
Among the outstanding garments on display was a robe made by Christine Bollweg from a Persian tapestry, a very stylish ensemble of rayon shantung, costing $5.05 and which was made by Ramona Salem. The problem of the garment was the intricate piping on the dress and coat. Another clever looking dress was a red and white print costing 73 cents, the material, 48, the trimming 20 and the thread 5 cents. The dress was of fast color print. This dress was made by Ernestina Lopez of the eighth grade. Margaret Bohn and Valentina Breton each had made attractive cotton dresses, of the more expensive type, costing about $2.00. Both dresses were stylish, well made and especially suited to their type.
In the exhibit was also a beautiful display of underwear made by Miss Anne Marie Stevens, instructor of sewing in the high school.
