Highway accidents will claim the life of the 1,000,000th victim in the United States by late 1951 or early 1952. This tragic prediction was recently made by John Cruickshank, chief safety engineer of the United States Guarantee Company. It is based upon the volume of highway fatalities as gathered from statistics dating back to 1907.
The death record made by motor vehicles has exceeded the estimated destruction of life by one atom bomb of the future. Mr. Cruickshank declares.
The headlines of today bombard us with the catastrophic potential of the atom bomb and its yet untried big brother, the hydrogen bomb," he said. "As we listen to predictions of a million deaths from an explosion, it is beyond comprehension to most of us. But during the next year, or shortly after its end, the millionth American will be killed in an automobile accident."
Mr. Cruickshank said that the safe motorist when on the road realized that in reality he was driving five cars: his own, the ones in front and the rear and two on the sides.-B. of L. E's Journal
