From the Washington Journal.

Mr. Crawford in Maine.--A writer in the Eastern Argus, by way of replying to the insinuations of some other writer, that Messrs. King and Holmes, the two great props of radicalism in Maine, were not quite such disinterested friends of Mr. Crawford, as they were willing to be thought, has drawn out a sort of account current, in which are ostentatiously set forth, the various offices which have been bestowed upon General Dearborn, and his connections, from the commencement of our government to the present time !

And what, it may be asked, has all this parade of official favors, lavished upon General Dearborn, and his family, to do with the disinterestedness' of General King and Mr. Holmes ? Why, it seems, that these sagacious politicians, having found out that the Dearborn family are all friends of Mr. Adams, are fearful that. if Mr. A. should be elected President, they will continue to feed upon the loaves and fishes of Presidential patronage, to the exclusion of others, whose appetites are equally keen! But if Mr. Crawford should be elected, the well-known hostility of this numerous and respectable family to him, as a sort of pledge that he will visit them with his retributive vengeance, and set them all adrift. This is the reason assigned, why Messrs. King and Holmes, prefer Mr. Crawford ! Really, it seems to us, a strange way of shewing the disinterestedness of these gentlemen, Why are they all so anxious to get rid of the Dearborns, if it be not to make room for themselves or some of their friends?

And how is the good fortune of this family, in any manner connected with the pretensions of Mr. Adams ? It was neither from him, nor from his father, that they received their several promotions, but from Mr. Jefferson, Mr. Madison, and Mr. Monroe; and this is the way that these pretended friends of Mr. Jefferson, would show their respect for his appointments and recommendations, by seeking to displace from office, the family whom he thought worthy of advancement. But suppose it admitted, that this family have enjoyed the dignities and emoluments of office, to a greater extent than they deserve, how does that bear upon the great national question of pre-eminence between Mr. Crawford and Mr. Adams?

If there were really no selfish interest in the examination of that question, the friends of Mr. Crawford would better show their consistency, by remaining silent as to the probable distribution of office hereafter. The louder they raise their voice against family monopolies, the stronger will be the evidence that they desire to gain something by their overthrow. After all, however, the plain truth of the matter is, that Messrs. King and Holmes, being driven from every inch of the electioneering ground, which they have so long and so manfully disputed in Maine, have resorted to this outcry against a family, as a last effort.

It is a ruse de guerre, for which they deserve the praise of some cunning, but which is not deep enough to entrap the good people of Maine.
