Full Text

Alexander H. Everett has again been defeated in his views of getting into Congress. Mr. Everett is known for his love for office, his greediness for the public pap, to encompass which he has adopted every new creed that came up, and defended it with talents and education which would do honor to a better cause. When anti-masonry was rife in Massachusetts, Everett was an anti-mason; when loco focoism broke out in its worst form, he took the disease, and spread it among the people, and is as rampant a Van Buren man as wears the collar. With the abolitionists, he goes with those who go the farthest, and that doctrine is certainly generally popular in Massachusetts. We do not know which end of the "stirred pot" he took hold of, but of course that which is most popular in the Ninth District; and calculating on the esprit du corps of the Van Buren party and the local popularity of his various temperaments, he thought to seize at once on office, and we confess that we feared that he would succeed. For, in addition to all the circumstances to which we referred, we could not doubt that some portion of the Whig opposition would be neutralized by the fact that he was brother to Governor Everett, and brother-in-law to Mr. Hale, the editor of the Boston Daily Advertiser, a gentleman of distinguished worth and extensive influence. We know, of course that the two last named gentlemen would not use influence in his favor, but they could not prevent a certain degree of influence. The result, however, is as it ought to be. -N. Y.
