ANNAPOLIS, Md., Aug. 16. (U.P.)—After being "jinxed" by unfavorable weather for more than a week, Lieut. Al Williams was unable again this morning to take to the air in his $175,000 Schneider cup racer, The Mercury.
The wind was from the wrong direction and he explained it was impossible to take off except against the wind and that the wind must come in from the bay so the take off would be away from the shore.
He still intends to make the flight he said, and will remain here another week if necessary. He explained if he did not ship the plane until Aug. 28 he still would have time to make the races at Cowes, Eng., Sept. 6 and 7.
If weather and wind permit, he plans to make the flight this afternoon.
Williams has been followed by apparent bad luck since his plane arrived at the Naval Academy dock at Santee basin from the Philadelphia Naval Aircraft factory.
The weather was ideal on the first day, but the ship sank until one wing was under the dock after it was launched, because two workmen stood on one pontoon. Since then, a propeller was bent in taxiing tests, and unfavorable winds have prevented a take-off on other days.
