Full Text

We have before us a statement of the Population of Greece, the principal part of which was received by Mr. King from Count V. A. Capo D'Istria, brother of the President. It was taken from the Register of Ali Pasha. Mr. King says, "I have not much confidence in its correctness: still I think it may be an approximation to the truth with regard to the population of Greece as it was eight or ten years ago." "I have made some other investigations respecting the population of Greece, which I intend to send soon. For the present I will say that I suppose there are not more than about 100,000 or 120,000 Greeks who can be called free—this is, inhabitants of the Peloponesus and of the Islands." The Islands Mr. King supposes to contain from 600,000 to 700,000 inhabitants. They are now included in the following abstract of the document mentioned above.

Thessaly is divided into 12 cantons or departments containing 41,250 Turks, and 398,000 Christians—total 439,250. In Eastern and Western Greece are 20 cantons, and 456,845 inhabitants, of whom only 15,000 are Turks.

Epirus embraces 18 cantons, and has 403,680 inhabitants, of whom 76,340 are Turks. The population of the Morea is estimated at 650,000—that of Southern Macedonia at 150,000, of whom 30,000 are Turks. In round numbers, the estimate mentioned above gives to the districts enumerated an aggregate population of about 2,050,000: viz: Turks—120,000, Christians, 1,930,000.

We hope ere long to have from the indefatigable agent whom the Ladies have employed—some more trust-worthy statements on this subject.
