Washington Twp. Division Meeting.
Agreeable to previous notice a large and enthusiastic meeting was held in the Freeburg school house on Tuesday evening, March 15th, when on motion it was organized by calling DANIEL SCHWARTZ to the chair; Lewis Dauberman, Jacob Straub, David Moyer, Vice Presidents; and Henry S. Boyer, Secretary. The meeting was addressed by Dr. J. B. Hower, D. S. Boyer, and F. C. Moyer. The Chair appointed the following persons to be a committee to report resolutions: Dan'l S. Boyer, Chairman, E. R. Menges, A. Bertch, and J. Bickel, and Daniel German, who reported as follows:
Since the division of Union county has been agitated by the citizens of the county, we have watched with intense anxiety the movements of the Legislature on the subject, and having recently heard that a bill has been reported wherein the $200,000 subscription to the Susquehanna Railroad is thrown upon the northern county, in case it will be divided, we the citizens of Washington township have assembled to proclaim our sentiments.
Resolved, That we have been informed that the northern portion of the county are willing and desirous that the responsibility of the $200,000 subscription should fall upon their county, and we are perfectly willing and satisfied that the same shall be assumed, by them, and hereby make known that we wish to be exonerated from any connection with the same; and in doing so, we believe we speak the sentiments of nine-tenths of the citizens of the southern portion of the county.
Resolved, That we wish the legislature to procure the desired exoneration from the subscription, for we believe the northern portion will be greatly benefited by the same, and therefore wish the citizens who will be benefited by the same, may also be responsible for the bonds.
Resolved, That the resolutions passed at the meeting held in Lewisburg, March 11, express our views, and we cordially endorse the same. Also the resolutions passed at the meeting held in Perry township on March 12th.
Resolved, That we believe that the Lewisburg Chronicle and Union Demokrat have pursued the right course with reference to the division, and have not disgraced their columns with abuse, as some of the New Berlin papers have done. We do not claim to be the "Great State of Freeburg," but claim the privileges of freemen in spite of abuse.
Resolved, That we look upon the communication in the New Berlin papers signed "Washington Township Dutchman," with contempt, and believe the statements of the same to be unfounded, and that it never emanated from a citizen of Washington township.
Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be published in the Union Democrat and Lewisburg Chronicle, and all papers throughout the county favorable to the same.
[Signed by the officers.]
