My Mother's Portrait
Dainty 'kerchief white as snow,
given just fifty years ago;
Hair smoothed back in rows of curls.
Round her neck a rope of pearls,
That's my mother.
High-heeled slippers white and small,
And they make her look so tall;
Brocade gown down to her feet.
Yes, from tip to toe she's sweet,
That's my mother.
But the best and sweetest grace
Is her lovely flower face;
Rosy cheeks and dainty nose,
Lips the color of a rose,
That's my mother.
Little maiden, though you're old,
Time can never steal the gold
From the ripples of your hair;
You will never know a care,
My sweet mother.
Little maid of olden time,
'Tis for you I write this rhyme:
Never you will older be.
There you hang and smile at me,
My sweet mother.
Eugenie Du Mourier.
