LONDON, July 4.
We are rejoiced to hear our assurances of the perfect innocence of the illustrious female, the Princess of Wales, confirmed from all quarters; and that such is the result of the enquiry no doubt is entertained. We trust it will be found advisable, from the circumstances we have stated, to give the main points of the process, and the report upon them, to the public.
We think it a satisfaction due to every member of the community, and a justice to the illustrious personage. The feeling of the public, always affectionate towards this amiable Princess, have assumed a particular animation since this extraordinary transaction has been divulged. Nothing can surpass the demonstrations of love towards her, and the expressions of indignation against her accusers. Yesterday this was exemplified in the most striking manner. A vast multitude collected in front of the house of the virtuous and highly esteemed marchioness Townshend, with whom her royal highness dined, and waited for several hours, till her royal highness retired, for the purpose of cheering her with the most heart-felt expressions of applause and attachment. Such feelings prove, that the people of England will always afford to injured innocence, a support, on which it may rely with a perfect security, against the influence of malice, however foul, against the designs of conspirators, however wicked, and however powerful.
A message from his majesty was yesterday delivered to both houses of Parliament, relative to the usual vote of credit, in order to enable him "the better to defend his possessions from the designs of the enemy, and to provide for such exigencies as may arise." Another debate took place on the training bill, and the house again divided upon the question.
Friday night, in consequence of his majesty's message to parliament on Wednesday, lord Henry Petty, brought forward a proposition relative to the new arrangement and increase of the annuities provided for the maintenance of the younger branches of the royal family, except the duke of York, who in consequence of the ample provision made for him by parliament, had waived any further claim on the liberality of the country. Lord Henry Petty proposed, that the incomes of the princes should be increased from 12,000l. to 18,000l. that of the princess Charlotte of Wales, from 6,000l. to 7,000l. those of the princesses from 5,000l. to 6,000l.; and that of the princess Sophia of Gloucester, from 4,000l. to 5,000l. and that of the duke of Gloucester, from 5,000l. to 14,000l. per annum; 4,000l. was also voted to the duchess Dowager of Gloucester: all of which are now to be secured on and transferred to the consolidated fund.
