COLONEL MEARS READY TO COME NORTH AGAIN
Head of Alaska Railroad Announces Traffic Deals on Yukon River.
SEATTLE, Feb. 8.—Colonel Frederick Mears, chairman of the Alaska Engineer Commission, constructing the Government Railroad in Alaska, arrived here today from an official trip to Washington, D. C., and will leave for his headquarters at Anchorage on the steamer Alameda, sailing February 24.
Colonel Mears said plans for opening a vast area of the interior by connection with the Government Railroad are now being evolved.
Colonel Mears announced that the steamboats General Jacobs and General Davis are to ply on the Yukon next summer between Nenana and St. Michael, beginning from the middle of May to June. These vessels have been turned over to the Alaska Railroad by the War Department.
A traffic agreement with the White Pass & Yukon Route is now being made for Yukon business, both freight and passengers.
