ST. JOHN'S (Antigua) February 25.
Last Saturday, about nine in the evening, a fire broke out from the sail loft of Captain Snow, on the wharf of the Hon. Thomas Jarvis Esq; which in an instant communicated itself to the whole building; the fire engines were immediately played, and vast numbers both of white and black people, with buckets, kept a continual supply of water. The sailors, with their natural intrepidity, got upon the neighbouring houses and stores, and kept the flames from spreading by throwing water or stripping the roofs. The publick are much indebted to the care and vigilance of Captain Dundas. and the officers of the 68th, who upon the first discovery of the fire ordered the soldiers from the barracks to the assistance of the inhabitants and their example encouraged every one to exert his ability to extinguish the flames. Sentries were placed at every avenue to protect from pillage the property of such as were obliged to throw their goods and merchandize in the streets. Mr. Looby, Mr. Byam Mr Duer, and several other Gentleman, were likewise particularly assiduous on the occasion, being always present where the fire was the fiercest, encouraging and directing the people in their endeavours to stop the progress of the conflagration, which was happily accomplished about one in the morning. Two white men and a Negro were much bruised by a fall from the side of a high building.
