Gamblers in Columbia.—We are pleased to see that the city authorities of Columbia have expressed a determination to root out, at any cost, the gambling establishments in that city, which we are told, are much more numerous than outsiders dream of. If there is any place in the State where especial vigilance should be exercised to break up these vagabonds who prey upon society, it certainly should be in the city where the young men of our State are collected for the advancement of their education. The gambler is scarce a degree removed from the professional pick-pocket, and we would rejoice to see the laws vigorously enforced against them. They are a silent but a numerous and active class, and many an unfortunate youth carefully and religiously trained at home, has returned from College demoralized and undone by an unsuspected intercourse with these knights of dark alleys and secret chambers. We observe that the gamblers about Columbus, Ga., have betaken themselves to the swamps to avoid indictments, and we hope Mayor Tradewell and his coadjutors may be so successful as to produce a stampede of the fraternity from the neighborhood of our capitol.
