Full Text

It is said that Mr. Sheriff Wilkes stands a very fair chance of being Lord Mayor for the year ensuing, partly owing, as it is said, to the other candidate's having obliged the majority of the Court of Aldermen, and partly as it is hinted from the presumed assistance he will receive from the Ministry, who are of opinion, when once his ambition is accomplished, they shall have nothing to fear from so formidable and insidious an adversary. It is likewise certain, that Mr. Wilkes's assiduity as a Magistrate, together with the universal odium of his enemies, has very considerably contributed to the probability of such an event.
