Fort Smith, Ark., July 17—A posse is scouring the southern part of this county for William Thomas who, near Hartford last night, fired four bullets into the body of Lafayette Layne, his father-in-law, and from the results of which Layne died this morning.

Layne had filed charges of bigamy against Thomas and the latter had been arrested and was in jail awaiting trial when he made his escape.

He had not been seen again until he appeared armed at the home of his father-in-law and opened fire on him as he lay beside his wife upon a cot. Upon leaving the place of the murder, Thomas held up and robbed a man of a small amount of money.
