We observe that a letter printed in the Norfolk Ledger purporting to be from a gentleman in Boston, is running the circuit in democratic papers.— The editor of the Ledger very properly throws a doubt upon the fact.
On the 4th of July, the American sailors at Liverpool were indulged in a suspension of duty. A large number of them assembled at a sailor boarding house, to keep it up, and as it is not unusual on such occasions, by the wane of the day, they became outrageous. As yet, the American colours had been flying on the American shipping without the least insult or interruption. But at this boarding house, the American colours were hoisted over the British. This indiscretion produced a collection of English sailors; a riot and grand fight ensued. The British tars resented the insult; took down the American colours and becoming outrageous in their turn, proceeded to the docks and tore down those of the contiguous shipping. The sailor mob, in which, we are sorry to say, our countrymen were the aggressors, has been called a violent insult to our nation, and our government is called upon to make it a national affair.
We confidently assert these to be facts, upon good authority. We are far from justifying the English sailors; but suppose the American flag were disgraced in the same manner, by British sailors, here, in Fish-market, on the king's birth day, is it possible that our patriotic seamen would suffer the insult to pass with impunity! Respectfully New-York. September 27.
