Having driven from Konawa through the well cultivated section but rather dusty roads, I was more than compensated when I arrived at Post-Office Hill. Here the Mail-car stopped for an hour or so before returning with the Mail to Konawa. I was fortunate in meeting an Old Timer who willingly gave me all the information I needed.
About a quarter of a mile from the Post-Office stands the Benedictine Monastery. It is reached by a beautiful catalpa grove, called St. Benedict's Boulevard. To the North of the Monastery and separated from its grounds stand the vast farm yard. Here can be seen, in regular order, the wind mills, cow-barns, hay and store rooms, stables and slaughter house. While stretching far North, South and West lie the cornfields, vineyards, orchards and meadows.
On entering the Monastery grounds, we walked along a semicircular Avenue, called the North drive. The first structure on the right is the water works. An immense large tank stands on the top of a tower some eighty feet high. Next in order are the printing office, carriage-house, stone cutter's yard, bakery, binding room and parish Library and finally the Abbatial temporary Church.
Here I turned Southward, passing by the pretty cottages occupied by special students, the College buildings, the typographical and Type-writing pavilions, green houses and gymnasium. I then turned East and soon reached the gate at which I entered.
I did not dare ask to see the interior of the Monastery as seculars are never admitted beyond the parlor. I regretted that time did not allow of a longer visit, but I felt satisfied that I saw an Institution conducted by a religious Order founded by the Great St. Benedict in Monte Casino.
