Full Text
T. M. TUCKER.
We are pleased to learn through the Mississippian, that this able and distinguished champion of popular rights, and the Constitution, has consented to become a candidate to fill the gubernatorial chair of this State.
Mr. Tucker is a strict adherent of the time-honored principles of the Democratic faith. During a long Senatorial career, in the Legislature of this State, he has stood as a sentinel upon the watch tower, and timely, and fearlessly exposed every encroachment on our sacred constitution by ignorant and designing politicians; for which reason, he has received from them, the appellation, "Constitutional Tucker." His speech in opposition to the monstrous proposition that the aggregate people of Mississippi are legally or morally bound to pay the bonds sold for the benefit of the Union Bank, is indeed a most able and convincing production, and should be in the hands of every Mississippian. It has already produced, in the minds of many, a conviction of the correctness of the positions he assumes; and will have a like effect on thousands more if circulated.
From indications of public sentiment throughout the State, and especially in the Northern and eastern portions, but little doubt can be entertained of the election of Mr. Tucker.
