Gothenburg, Sweden (ANP) - A million dollar purse for each fighter in the much-discussed Ingemar Johansson-Floyd Patterson heavyweight title return bout was predicted last week, after the balky Johansson signed the contract for the fight here in his hometown.
Instead of Sept. 22, 1959, as originally scheduled, the bout now will take place sometime between next March 1 and June 15. It will be promoted by former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey, who cornered the Swede here and got him to come to terms.
Dempsey was appointed promotion director of the embattled Rosensohn Enterprises, which now bears only the name of its former founder. Bill Rosensohn, the boy-promoter who got a painful lesson in promoting the first Johansson-Patterson bout last June 26, claimed he was forced out of the organization by associates. Rosensohn also charged he was forced to relinquish rights to radio and television and controlling share of the company's stock in order to keep the bout.
Both the promotional enterprise and its new president, Vincent Velella, are suspended in New York. Therefore, it is unlikely that the bout will be held in Gotham.
Meanwhile, the delay in the fight is expected to aid Patterson, who was stopped by Johansson in the third round of their initial ruckus.
Floyd, who appeared rusty in the bout after lengthy periods of inactivity, will get a chance to sharpen his reflexes and timing.
If Floyd regains the form he achieved for the Archie Moore fight in 1956, he could regain the title. Floyd was exceptionally quick in knocking out the cagey Moore in the fifth round. Johansson, while a strong puncher, is slow afoot
Patterson's quarrelsome manager, Cus D'Amato, is remaining curiously quiet in the meantime. Normally a talkative man, some months ago he kept up a running feud with the now defunct International Boxing club, and seemed to enjoy every minute of it. Cus this time is letting Johansson do the talking. He apparently fears wrecking Floyd's chance at the return match.
Among cities mentioned for the return bout are Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Houston and Miami. Johansson is said to have preferred Los Angeles with its 105,000 seat coliseum.
