Local Anaesthesia.—The dangers attending the inhalation of the vapors of anaesthetic agents led to the introduction of what are known as "Local Anaesthetics."

Various means have been tried; among them the application of the electro-galvanic current; one pole of the battery being attached to the forceps, and a connection with the other held in the hand of the patient. Various local applications upon the tooth and surrounding gums have also been tried for the purpose of obtunding sensibility previous to extracting. But more recently the Dental Freezing Apparatus, invented by B. W. Richardson, of London, has come into general use, by which teeth can be extracted and minor surgical operations performed without pain or danger. A periodical in speaking of it says: "It has been very favorably received throughout Great Britain, and is said to meet with unparalleled success. Although it has been manufactured but a short time in this country, yet there are a great many Surgeons and Dentists who use it and could not now well do without it."
