THE ECLIPSE OF THE SUN

It Was Only Partially Visible in Lancaster, But Well Observed Elsewhere.

Sunday's eclipse of the sun was observed by many people in town through the medium of smoked glass, but as it is but partially visible here the laudable curiosity of these people was not adequately rewarded, and a reporter of the INTELLIGENCER has undertaken to compensate them by gathering from local savants whatever he could find of interest with relation to this wink of old Sol.

The new observatory at the college still lacks its dome, and therefore no observations of any value could be made from it, and Professor Kerschner was not obliged to hurry home from his tour in the far West. The reporter called upon Professor Stahr and was courteously received by that gentleman, and had his thirst for knowledge satisfied. He still carries his hat in his hand.

The line of total eclipse lay almost wholly on the ocean. It ran "from the Isthmus of Panama along the northern shore of South America, crossed the Atlantic and touched Africa at Benguela, in Lower Guinea. A party of English astronomers were on the Island of Granada, one of the Windward Islands, off the Northeast coast of South America. No official expedition was sent out from this country, although Secretary Whitney advised Congress to take action in the matter, but Professor Pickering, of Boston, was expected to be present with the English observers on Granada. Only a partial phase of the observation was visible in the United States east of the Mississippi river and south of the forty-third degree of north latitude.
