MALTA.

CITIZEN Remi, who left Toulon on the 10th of May, arrived at Malta the latter end of the same month. The garrison had not received any intelligence from France for the space of ten months. He states, that there were only 40 sick in the hospital of Malta, and that the garrison enjoyed the most perfect health.

During the first year of the blockade, almost the whole of the garrison were afflicted with a severe complaint in the eyes, but they have since accustomed to the climate, and completely cured. The soldiers have each a garden, which not only supplies them with vegetables, but produces enough for sale to the inhabitants. General Vaubois had sent away, at different times, most of the inhabitants, and there are not at present more than 4 or 5000 left in the place. There are above 400 mules in the town, which are employed in the service of the artillery, and there is a considerable number of mills kept going.

The garrison is determined to hold out to the last extremity, and there is a sufficient quantity of provisions to last till the middle of winter, independently of the supplies that will be brought by the small vessels which must inevitably enter the port.

The utmost gaiety prevails in the place, and there is every night a comedy and a grand concert. A great number of boats are constantly employed in fishing, and a magazine of salt fish has been established by General Vaubois, which will furnish a new resource.

Every mess of troops has a small yard with rats and fowls.

The artillery is in the best state. The impregnable works which defend this place have been repaired, and rendered effective. We have profited by the long blockade to raise a number of new works.

There are at Malta 3000 pieces of cannon perfectly well equipped.

General Vaubois, General Chanez, General Dauzel, Commander of the artillery, Vice Admiral Villemeneuve, commanding the port, and all the officers of the garrison, live in the best understanding, and are animated by the best dispositions. The soldiers say, 'We shall perform a furlough of four years at Malta."

Citizen Remi was, on his return, very often within half a league of the English cruisers.
