Home Construction Again Approaches New Record

Washington, D. C.—Home builders throughout the nation started 95,000 new permanent nonfarm dwelling units in May, Secretary of Labor Maurice J. Tobin announced here. This is 9,000 more than were put under construction in April and is within 5 percent of the record 100,300 units put under construction in May 1948.

Preliminary estimates show that builders have started 343,400 new dwelling units in the first 5 months of 1949. The peak in housing starts will probably occur later this year than last.
